First detection of rain over the ocean by navigation satellites

In order to analyse climate change or provide information on natural hazards, for example, it is important for researchers to gather knowledge about rain. Better knowledge of precipitation and its distribution could, for example, help protect against river flooding. On land, monitoring stations can provide data by collecting precipitation. At sea, it's not so easy.

Space technology allows precise navigation without GNSS

The German Aerospace research center DLR developed an optical navigation and inspection system for use in environments where position determination is not possible via a satellite navigation system such as GPS or Galileo. The Integrated Positioning System (IPS) can accurately determine one's own position without additional "prior knowledge" of the environment and without external reference points. Originally developed for missions in outer space, the scientists also see possible applications in tunnels, mines or industrial facilities, for example.

Google's BigQuery Brings GIS Into The Petascale Era

Perhaps the greatest challenge confronting today’s “big data” era lies not the acquisition of data, but rather how companies can uncover insights from the chaos of petabytes. Today’s companies have assembled breathtakingly large archives of incredibly rich data but struggle to perform more than basic analyses at scale. This is especially true when it comes to reasoning in terms of the more complex dimensions like time and space. As the world’s data is increasingly geospatially enriched and as companies increasingly need to understand their data in terms of its physical location, we need tools that can query, analyze and reason about immense geospatial data at population scale. Enter Google’s new BigQuery GIS.

Converting a Drawings Coordinate System

For one reason or another drawings sometimes need to be moved from one coordinate system (datum) to another.  A classic example may be moving from a NAD 27 datum to a NAD 83.  Whatever the case may be, how might one perform this translation as accurately as possible?

DT Research’s newest tablet provides scientific-grade GNSS

DT Research has announced the DT372AP-TR rugged RTK tablet, a lightweight military-grade tablet that  offers real-time kinematic (RTK) to enhance the precision of position data derived from satellite-based positioning systems.
The tablet enables 3D point cloud creation with centimeter-level accuracy to meet the high standards required for scientific-grade evidence in court.

BIM vs GIS or BIM and GIS – Why are we still in doubt?

BIM (Building Information Modeling) and GIS (Geographic Information System) are two critical technologies, whose integration can bring exemplary results into digitalconstruction. However, there remains a point of contention in this integration. While a group is stuck with the thought of BIM vs GIS, things are looking up with many experts following a more progressive thought of integrating the two.

High-resolution satellite imagery received from the Aist-2D satellite by Russian Laboratory Complex for Satellite Monitoring

Image of high resolution from the Russian satellite “Aist-2D” was received by the Laboratory complex for satellite monitoring “LoReTT” (LoReTT – Local Real Time Tool). The spacecraft “Aist-2D” transmitted data of the territory of Perth city (Australia) on June 15, 2018. It was the first time when such detailed image (spatial resolution of 2 m) of the Earth from space acquired on antenna that does not have rotational device traditional for such technologies, and instead of this feed is moved above the fixed antenna dish. This approach made it possible to simplify the design of the antenna, making it more mobile, universal and substantially cheaper than analogs. Note that previously, low-resolution data was successfully received from Terra and Aqua satellites.
